Lesson 1
Why Study Divine Healing
Focus
Divine healing is first not a technique; it begins with knowing God’s heart.
Key Scriptures
- Matthew 9:35–36Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.
Summary
- Jesus Christ reveals the Father’s compassion toward people who are sick, weary, oppressed, or afraid.
- Healing ministry begins with love, not performance, pressure, or the desire to prove spirituality.
- Ordinary believers can learn to pray for the sick because Jesus Christ entrusted ministry to those who believe.
- We are not the healer or the source; we are obedient vessels through whom God’s love, Word, and life can flow.
Reflection
When I think about praying for the sick, what is the greatest hindrance in my heart? Is it fear of failure, or uncertainty about whether God is willing?
Prayer
Loving Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your heart through Jesus Christ. Thank You for allowing us to see Your compassion, Your love, and Your desire to restore people. I choose to renew my mind with Your Word. I do not want fear, past failures, or human traditions to define my view of healing. Help me look to Jesus Christ and learn from Him. I am willing to learn. I am willing to grow. I am willing to become a vessel of Your love. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Lesson 1: Why Study Divine Healing? When many people hear the word “healing,” many questions may arise in their hearts. Is God still healing people today? Is God willing to heal everyone? Can ordinary believers pray for the sick? What should I do if I prayed, but it seemed like nothing happened? What if my faith is weak? These are real questions. But we do not begin with human failure. We begin with Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the clearest revelation of the Heavenly Father. If we want to know how the Father sees the sick, we look at how Jesus Christ treated the sick. If we want to know God’s will concerning pain, sickness, and oppression, we look at what Jesus Christ did. In the Gospels, we see this again and again. People came to Jesus Christ, and He had compassion on them. People cried out for help, and He responded to them. People were oppressed, and He set them free. People were ignored by others, but He saw them. People felt unworthy, yet He still stretched out His hand and healed them. Jesus Christ did not look at human suffering with coldness. He did not require people to first prove that they were good enough before He was willing to help them. He revealed the Father’s heart: compassion, goodness, freedom, restoration, and life. Therefore, divine healing is first not a technique. It begins with knowing God’s heart. If we misunderstand God’s heart, we will hesitate when we pray. We may say the right words, but inwardly we may be wondering: “Is God really willing?” “Did this sickness come from God?” “Am I too unworthy?” “Is my faith enough?” “Am I qualified to pray for others?” These thoughts make the heart heavy and uncertain. But Scripture brings our eyes back to Jesus Christ. The Bible records in the Book of Matthew that Jesus Christ went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. When He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd. This is very important. Jesus Christ did not heal people in order to create a religious performance. He did not do it so people would admire a ministry. He did not do it to prove human greatness. He healed people because He saw their suffering and was moved with compassion. Therefore, true healing ministry must begin with love. Without love, healing becomes pressure. Without love, people will be afraid of failure. Without love, we may treat the sick as “results,” instead of precious lives loved by Heavenly Father. We study divine healing because Jesus Christ loves people. We learn to pray for the sick because Jesus Christ commanded His followers to minister. We learn to act by faith and to recognize and use the authority that Jesus Christ has already given, because Jesus Christ has already overcome, and He continues to work through His body, which is the church. In Mark 16, Jesus Christ said that believers would lay hands on the sick in His name, and they shall recover. Please notice that Jesus Christ entrusted this matter to “those who believe.” He did not say that only famous people could do it. He did not say that only those who stand on a platform could do it. He did not say that only those who feel very spiritual could do it. Jesus said, “those who believe.” This gives us great hope. You do not need to become perfect before you can begin to learn. You do not need to understand everything before you begin to obey. You do not need to wait until you no longer feel weak before you pray for others. What you need is to return to Jesus Christ, listen to His words, know His heart, and be willing to follow Him in obedience. Of course, we must also remain humble. We are not the healer. Jesus Christ is the healer. We are not the source. The life of God is the source. We are not proving anything by our own ability. We are simply learning to become obedient vessels, allowing the love of God, the Word of God, and the life of God to flow through us. This is the purpose of this course. Many Christians love God and love people, but they do not know where to begin. When they see someone sick, they may say, “I will pray for you,” but they are not sure how to pray. Sometimes they pray for a long time but without faith. Sometimes they want to help, but they are afraid of saying the wrong thing, doing the wrong thing, or failing. This course is meant to help us return to a simple and clear biblical foundation: to see how Jesus Christ healed people, and to learn to minister according to His way. We will come to know the heart of the Heavenly Father more deeply. We will see the believer’s identity in Christ. We will remove the wrong beliefs that bring fear and hesitation. We will also practice how to pray and minister in a simple, clear way, with love and faith. We will also learn that when we do not immediately see results, we do not accuse ourselves and we do not accuse others. Instead, we continue to trust God’s goodness and continue to stand on the Word of God. Today, please remember three things. First, healing begins with God’s heart. Heavenly Father is not indifferent. Jesus Christ has already revealed His compassion. Second, healing ministry begins with love. We are not trying to display ourselves; we are learning to love and minister to people. Third, ordinary believers can learn to pray for the sick. Jesus Christ calls those who believe to minister in His name, not only a few special people. Let us pray: Loving Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your heart through Jesus Christ. Today’s reflection question is: When I think about praying for the sick, what is the greatest hindrance in my heart? Is it fear of failure, or uncertainty about whether God is willing? In the next lesson, we will learn: God Is Willing to Heal.
